The Dylan Dagenais Difference™:
A Work-fishin’ mission statement
1. believe in the human touch.
No piece or score of mine is 100% synthesized. While I love synthesizers and their ability to create and emulate a vast amount of sounds and colors relatively and inexpensively, there is always something REAL in the music I make. Given that we are creatives, we should be thinking outside of the box… so why make all of our music IN the box?
In my scores I use instruments- real instruments! Voices, noisemakers, found or altered sounds, field recordings… a lot of my experimentation comes from a human element. I can use sounds that tie thematically to the project and make them musical.
I believe in the happy accidents that come from recording something outside of a computer. A little string buzz, the air of two tones vibrating out of sync in real space, an extra loud percussion pop… these things make music feel ALIVE.
2. I pick up the phone.
I put as much effort into being a great collaborator as a great composer. When a director or producer texts me, I text back same day. I respond to my emails. I make edits within the week. Everyone deserves collaborators who can communicate. My current and previous collaborators can attest that I give everyone I work with a direct line to me and my work. I let my team see my works in progress and give feedback at any point in the process.
3. I love my work.
Simply put, I bring passion to every project. I treat each score like its my first. I believe a score should be bespoke- tailor-made with ingenuity and creativity. I don’t recycle pieces and I never phone it in. Your project is as special to me as it is to you, and I won’t settle for a finished product that’s less than brilliant.
Let’s get started!
